Looking at a slightly more expensive PC that features a quad-core AMD Phenom II X4 processor, the HP Pavilion p6616f-b ($749.99 with monitor, 3 stars), the Athlon II X4-based Pavilion p6610f holds up well. The Pavilion p6610f beat these two dual-core PCs by similar margins on our Windows Media Encoder test, but the Inspiron i560 (5 minutes 6 seconds) managed to best the Pavilion p6610f (5:52) on our Photoshop CS5 test. The Pavilion p6610f's PCMark Vantage score of 5,875 was 30 percent better than the Essentio CM1630 and 14 percent better than the Inspiron i560. For example, it outpaces dual-core budget PCs such as the Athlon II X2 220-based Asus Essentio CM1630-05 ($479.99, 4 stars) and the Intel Pentium dual-core E5700-based Dell Inspiron i560-2910NBK ($649.98 with a monitor, 3.5 stars). With a quad-core Athlon II X4 635 CPU, the p6610f did well for itself in labs testing its benchmark results show that its configuration provides a lot of pop for the price. Note that similar models sold at Costco come with a warranty that lasts two years. Lastly, the system is backed by a standard one-year warranty. The mouse is your basic, ambidextrous optical affair. The keyboard offers good feel, with firm keys and a wide wrist. The Pavilion p6610f features a standard, wired keyboard and mouse.

The hard drive boasts ample storage space, but it does come pre-loaded with more than its fair share of bloatware, including a needless desktop icon for eBay, a collection of Wild Tangent games (under the banner HP Games), and trial offers for Quickbooks, Quicken, and Norton Internet Security. Although the graphics are integrated, meaning they borrow resources from the main system memory, they are ATI's most recent integrated graphics revision. The other core specs include 4GB of DDR3 memory, a big 750GB hard drive, and integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics. The processor sits in the sweet spot for a budget PC it provides discernibly better performance than similarly priced models that use dual-core Intel or AMD processors. The Pavilion p6610f is based on the AMD Athlon II X4 635, a quad-core processor clocked at 2.9GHz, which HP pairs with 4GB of DDR3 memory. In addition to 10/100 Ethernet, the system features 802.11n Wi-Fi. Other mainstream models, however, feature an HDMI port, which goes missing on the Pavilion p6610f. It's a fairly standard collection of ports, though some budget desktops, such as the Pavilion p6627c-b ($749.99 list, 3 stars), try to skate by on VGA alone for their video hook-up. On the back panel, you'll find both VGA and DVI ports, a digital audio port, 5.1 analog audio ports, an Ethernet jack, and 4 USB 2.0 ports.

Inside, the chassis offers some room for expansion, with two free 3.5-inch drive bays for additional hard drives, two of the four DIMMs slots are free for more memory, three empty x1 PCI Express slots, and one empty x16 PCI Express slot should you want to upgrade the PC's integrated graphics. The HP Pavilion p6610f doesn't look like a budget PC. None of its drawbacks are deal breakers we recommend the Pavilion p6610f for its attractive design, strong performance for the price, and integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity. In this case, the system comes littered with bloatware, lacks an HDMI port, and relies on integrated graphics. As with any budget PC, however, some sacrifices were made to achieve its low price. It also boasts a case that belies its budget status and serves up Wi-Fi out of the box. The highlights of the HP Pavilion p6610f ($529.98 list) desktop, available at Staples, are its a quad-core processor and a roomy 750GB (7,200rpm) hard drive.
